Hugh R. Grossman was born and raised in the Eastern USA and graduated Cum Laude from Springfield College, Massachusetts with a BS in public recreation and youth leadership. After graduation he worked for the Boy’s Clubs of America for 2 years in New York and 5 years in Arizona. He then moved to Hilo, Hawaii and worked for another 22 years in the field.
In 1989 Mr. Grossman began working at the mid-level facilities on Mauna Kea and in 1995 he went to work as a full-time astronomy guide at the Visitor Information Station on Mauna Kea where he still works. He has been interested in photography and astronomy all of his life. In the 32 years he’s lived on the Big Island, much of his photography has been devoted to Mauna Kea, his favorite place on Earth.
Dr. Estelle Young, a dermatologist, practiced in Virginia for 21 years before she moved on to Associate Clinical Professor at the Medical College of Virginia and worked in mental health at the Central State Hospital. After leaving private practice and moving to New York, Young attended a dermatology conference here and fell in love with Hawaii. She built a home as a result and while in Hawaii she met Mr. Grossman. Young and Grossman’s similar love for astronomy and photography would later produce a work to add to her previous five volumes of medical photos of dermatology pathology. Dr. Young continues her work in mental health in Virginia and at a cerebral palsy clinic in Brooklyn, New York.
Dr. Estelle Young and Mr. Grossman formed D & A Enterprise (Doctor and Astronomer) to share their love for photography and astronomy as photo cards throughout Hawaii.
Visions of Mauna Kea is the result of Grossman and Young’s many years of photographing the great “White Mountain“.
